Dr Nick York MBBCh Dip Ophth (SA) MMed Ophth (UCT) FC (SA) FRANZCO
Dr Nick York is an accomplished consultant ophthalmologist providing specialist eye care at Buderim Eye Centre and at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Dr York is a comprehensive general ophthalmologist with special interests and expertise in cataract surgery, cornea, glaucoma, medical retinal and macular disorders.
Dr York completed his undergraduate MBBCh medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand, where he graduated with distinction. He then went on to complete his Ophthalmology training at the world-renowned Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. He was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa and was awarded the Justin Van Selm medal as the top qualifying board candidate in the country. He then relocated to Australia to undertake further sub-specialty fellowship training as a corneal and anterior segment surgeon at the prestigious Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. He trained under a team of world leading experts in corneal surgery, gaining expertise in the latest cutting-edge advancements in lamellar (partial thickness) corneal transplant surgery, cataract surgery, corneal collagen cross-linking and laser eye surgery.
Dr York was involved with clinical trials through the Centre for Eye Research in Australia (CERA), wrote a textbook chapter on corneal transplantation, has published research in international journals and has presented at numerous local and international ophthalmology meetings. He is also actively involved as a consultant and lecturer, in the training and supervision of the next generation of RANZCO ophthalmologists at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. In addition to his public work as a cataract surgeon and general ophthalmologist, he currently heads up the Cornea and Glaucoma services at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
He has been working in the field of Ophthalmology since 2010 and practicing as a specialist consultant ophthalmologist since 2018. He has performed over 7000 eye surgeries in this time.
