Dr Sergio Sara BSc Hons PhD MBBS FRANZCO
Dr Sergio Sara
is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) and is a qualified General Ophthalmologist with subspecialty fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery. He practices at Buderim Eye Centre.
Dr Sara’s special interests include General Ophthalmology (cataract, pterygia, medical glaucoma and medical retina) and Oculoplastic (eyelid malposition, eyelid droop, tear drainage blockage and eyelid malignancy excision with reconstruction).
Educated at the University of Queensland and University of Notre Dame (Fremantle), Dr Sara completed a Bachelor of Science Degree, Honours degree and was then awarded a PhD (Cancer Research), before working as a stem cell biologist.
He completed a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, before being selected into the Ophthalmology training program at the prestigious Sydney Eye Hospital. Following this, he undertook further subspecialty training in Oculoplastic Surgery in New Zealand in 2023.
Dr Sara has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and international meetings. He holds public positions as a Consultant Visiting Medical Officer at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (where he enjoys teaching and supervising the next generation of ophthalmologists), and at Mount Isa Base Hospital (managing rural
patients and seeing a high number of First Nations people).
Dr Sara is bilingual (speaking fluent Spanish) and is often described as easy going with a relaxed demeanour. He prioritises patient communication and understanding and takes pride in providing consistent, high-level patient care.
